The Mission of Christ’s Church
The mission of the Christian Church is to be and make disciples of Jesus Christ, in authentic community, for the good of the world. We agree that Jesus comes with saving love for the whole world. He creates the church as a “missional community” to join him in his mission of rescuing the world. He then invites us to be part of this community to both experience his saving love and to participate in it.[1]
And what is mission? It’s the outward impulse of God’s people. Above and beyond evangelism or social justice, it’s the irresistible propulsion of the Spirit that sends his people out to proclaim the Lordship of Jesus and seek his good for all the world, whether they come to believe in him or not. This outward focus can be manifest in building relationships that communicate the gospel, planting churches, feeding the hungry, agitating against injustice, and more. These are missional activities. But mission itself is the overarching ‘sent-ness’ of God’s people, as they infiltrate all of society and stake a claim for the unending rule of Jesus in every sphere of life.
This way of thinking paints a larger picture than the traditional terms ‘missionary’ and ‘mission field’, since now every Christian is a missionary and every place is a mission field.
Those charged with mission leadership at FPCM prayerfully seek to discern where we see God already at work to and to join Him in that work. As well, we seek to develop opportunities for persons in Missoula, Montana to embrace a spiritual life together in Christ that is truly focused on Jesus’ mission of saving love for the good of the world.
